City of Fort Lupton OFFICIAL SITE Fort Lupton, situated in southern Weld County, is named for Lieutenant Lancaster Lupton, who originally came to the area with Colonel Dodges Dragoons in 1835. Seeing the possibilities for trade, Lt. Lupton built a trading fort in 1836. His business, as well as a farm thrived, but after a blizzard in 1844 decimated wildlife and trade, Lt. Lupton agreed to abandon his trading fort and began working for one of his competitors. Eventually he found his way to California where he started a mercantile business in Stockton, and later tried his hand at gold mining and orchard farming. Lt. Lupton died in California never returning to Colorado or his trading post. |
