Community Website for Elbert County, Colorado Elbert County and
the town of Elbert was named after the Territorial Governor and State Supreme court
Justice, Samuel H. Elbert. Elbert, in its heyday, was a large and bustling business area.
Russell Gates made the town the headquarters for his biggest, most modern mercantile
store. Sadly enough, such bliss could not last. On May 31, 1935, half of the town was
washed away by the flood waters of Kiowa Creek.
