Town of Dolores, Montezuma County, Colorado Montezuma County is located in the far southwestern corner of Colorado in what is referred to as the Four Corners Area, being the point where Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico meet. The area is perhaps best known for its immense archaeological resources, the most famous of which are in the Mesa Verde National Park. These treasures have been recognized more recently by the designation of the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Physically the area includes the eastern edges of the high desert Colorado Plateau and rises to include fourteen thousand foot peaks. The Dolores River flows through the county on its way to join the Colorado River providing rafting, kayaking, and world class fishing opportunities as well as being the water source for McPhee Reservoir, the second largest body of water in the state. With nearly 37% of the county in public lands, Boone and Crockett record setting hunting abounds. |
